A Fresh Twist on a Fresh Start

Every time a new year begins, many of us join in the ritual of making resolutions. Humans have an innate motivation to mark the start of something new with hopeful goals. Coming up with resolutions isn’t always easy, and the common goals to quit some bad habit or lose weight can sometimes create a negative mindset.

If you want this next year to create optimism and hope, you might try a different approach, such as focusing on personal growth through experiences rather than just resolutions. Instead of giving something up, you could add something in. Examples include taking up a new hobby, committing to a learning journey, or intentionally stepping outside your comfort zone to explore new perspectives. These types of fresh starts feel positive and can help you move closer to the type of person you want to become.

Here are a few ideas for a fresh twist on a fresh start for you or your teen:

Theme-based Approach. Choose a single word or theme to represent your focus for the year, and then find activities that align with that theme. For example, you might pick the word “growth,” “balance,” or “creativity,” and then you make decisions throughout the year that celebrate or help you experience that specific theme.

Monthly Micro-Challenges. Instead of one large-scale goal, set small, achievable challenges for each month of the year, such as trying a new recipe, visiting a local landmark, confronting a fear, or tackling a project.

Mindful Reset. Dedicate time to reflection and self-awareness at the beginning of the year, focusing on what truly matters to you and aligning your goals with your values.

Community-Driven Goals. Find a group or online community with similar interests and set collective goals to support each other throughout the year. Or choose a local nonprofit whose mission is meaningful to you and volunteer for them on a regular basis through the year.

Experiential Learning. Commit to taking a class, attending workshops, reading authors from different backgrounds, or traveling to a new place to gain new knowledge and perspectives.

Final Thoughts…

Setting goals can be very meaningful to us, but it’s important to set the ones that will truly bring you joy and purpose. Be intentional in choosing goals that will help you develop skills or mindsets that you value. Additionally, rather than focus on the end result of your goal, focus on enjoying the entire journey of learning, exploring, creating, and developing.

Middle Earth wishes you and your loved ones a healthy, happy, and prosperous new year!
