A recent New York Times article indicated that alcohol use among teenagers is highly prevalent in the latest Harry Potter movie. The Times reports that “young wizards and their adult professors are seen sipping, gulping and pouring various forms of alcohol to calm their nerves, fortify their courage or comfort their sorrows.”

Regardless of whether you believe that movies and other media have a strong influence on an individual teenager’s own decision to use alcohol, the new Harry Potter movie offers an opportunity for parents to talk to their kids about alcohol and reinforce their own values. Studies consistently show that our children are influenced by their parents.
